Breathe Better, Feel Better: The Science and Power of Coherent Breathing

by | Jun 9, 2025 | Better Breathing, Continuing Professional Development, Laura van Tatenhove, Upcoming Courses

Have you ever stopped to notice how you’re breathing?

Most of us rarely do. Yet, it’s one of the most direct, effective ways to influence our health and emotional wellbeing. Educator and artist, Laura van Tatenhove invites us to reconnect with the breath as a fundamental tool for healing. Our breath something that is simple, free, and always with us.

Ahead of her upcoming CPD workshop Better Breathing for Better Health, Laura has written a beautiful blog exploring the benefits of Coherent Breathing. She offers a practice that is both ancient and scientifically validated. From Tibetan monks to modern-day health researchers, there is growing recognition that a steady rhythm of 5–6 breaths per minute brings the body into greater alignment and balance. It’s called “coherent” for a reason: it helps key systems in the body—like the heart, brain, and lungs—start working together in harmony.

Why does this matter?

When your clients come to you with chronic tension, sleep issues, anxiety, or persistent inflammation, what do you do? What if you could offer them a simple breathing technique that helps regulate the nervous system and boost oxygen uptake by 20%? That’s the promise of Coherent Breathing—and it’s what Laura teaches in this practical, evidence-based course.

This isn’t about advanced pranayama or ecstatic breathwork. It’s about restoring our baseline. Helping clients—especially children, trauma survivors, or those with chronic health conditions—return to their body’s “factory settings,” as Laura puts it.

“When we help people breathe better, we’re affecting change at the level of survival,” Laura says. “The breath is deeply tied to our sense of safety and aliveness.”
