If you’ve found your way here without ever having heard of Bowen Therapy, you’re in good company. Many of the practitioners who now train, treat and teach with us started in exactly the same place: curious, perhaps a little sceptical, and looking for work that feels more meaningful than what they were doing before.
So, what is Bowen, and why do so many people decide to become Bowen therapists?
In this post, we explain what Bowen Therapy is, why people from all walks of life choose to train in it, and what learning with Bowen College UK actually looks like.
What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy is a gentle, hands-on bodywork technique. Practitioners use precise, rolling moves over muscle and connective tissue, often through light clothing.
Between sets of moves there are short pauses, giving the body time to respond.
It feels very different from a deep-tissue massage. Bowen is built on the principle of minimal intervention: doing less, and doing it with care and precision.
Clients often describe their sessions as calm and deeply relaxing. And for practitioners, that calm, attentive way of working is a large part of the appeal.
Why people choose to become Bowen therapists
Meaningful, people-centred work
At its heart, Bowen is about listening: to a client’s story, to what their body is telling you, and to what they need from each session. For many of our students, that sense of genuinely helping people is the main reason they train.
You don’t need a healthcare background
Our students come from every walk of life. Some are already massage therapists, physiotherapists or bodyworkers adding Bowen to their toolkit. Others are complete career changers.

Bowen College UK tutor Helen Cooper spent 17 years in banking before retraining. She had never even had a Bowen treatment when she went along to her first training session.
“After that first day I knew it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life!”

A career that fits around your life
Bowen practitioners work in all sorts of ways: from home, in clinics, alongside other therapists, or as part of an existing practice. Many build their practice gradually, part-time at first, which makes Bowen a realistic second career.
It’s gentle on you, too
Because Bowen relies on precision rather than force, it is far less physically demanding for the practitioner than many other hands-on therapies. That makes it a practice you can sustain and grow with over many years.
Why train with Bowen College UK?
