Discover the Journey of Jan Cafearo: From NHS Physiotherapist to Passionate Bowen Therapy Educator

Jan Cafearo, a dedicated tutor at Bowen College UK, has been practising Bowen therapy from her Shropshire clinic since 2006. Her journey into Bowen therapy is one of profound transformation and passion for holistic health. Jan’s career began in mainstream healthcare, where she trained and worked as a physiotherapist within the NHS. However, the constraints of the system didn’t resonate with her natural inclination towards holistic health.

“I didn’t fit into the system and the system didn’t fit me. It wasn’t until many years later that I realised that’s because I’m naturally a holistic health thinker.”

~Jan Cafearo

Jan’s transition to Bowen therapy was sparked by witnessing what she considered a miraculous recovery in a friend suffering from severe Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, achieved through just three Bowen treatments. This revelation led her to explore Bowen therapy further, eventually leading to her own certification in 2006. “I came to Bowen Therapy kind of by accident, by witnessing a friend have what I considered a miracle,” Jan recalls. The effectiveness of Bowen therapy, with its gentle, non-invasive approach, continues to amaze her. “I was so excited that I went on a course and then came to love Bowen and be really inspired and in awe through the results.”

As a tutor, Jan brings her deep enthusiasm and holistic perspective to her teaching. She loves seeing her students light up with wonder when they experience the profound effects of Bowen therapy for the first time. “What I love about teaching Bowen therapy is that it’s so exciting to pass on this enthusiasm I have for this amazing skill,” she says. Jan’s approach is grounded in her belief that society needs ways to take care of each other’s health and well-being. She passionately supports the Bowen College UK’s Introduction to Bowen Therapy (otherwise known as Reboot Your Body) course, which equips people with foundational skills to provide effective treatments to friends, family, and colleagues.

Jan’s dedication to Bowen therapy is reflected in her continuous professional development. She is a member of the Bowen Therapy Professional Association (BTPA) and the independent UK regulator for complementary healthcare practitioners (CNHC). Her commitment to holistic health extends beyond her clinic, as she engages in nature connection for well-being and environmental education.

In her own practice, Jan values the subtle signs that indicate a client’s transition into a state of deep relaxation, essential for the healing process. As she recently shared in her latest blog, the sounds of tummy gurgles, which signify a client’s shift into the “Rest and Digest” mode, are now more discernible to her thanks to her new hearing aids. This subtle yet significant feedback helps her give more effective sessions.

Jan Cafearo has been practising Bowen Therapy at her Shropshire clinic since 2006, growing more passionate each year about this gentle treatment. Qualified as a physiotherapist in 1981, Jan found the NHS's approach too limited for holistic care. Her diverse career spans health and wellbeing, teaching, and environmental education. Witnessing a friend's recovery with Bowen Therapy inspired her to train and share this effective technique.
