At Bowen College UK, we’re proud to support tutors who bring rich knowledge and heart to their teaching. Tutors who are out there in the world, sharing that wisdom to support community health and wellbeing. In this blog, Bowen Tutor Laura Van Tatenhove introduces her accessible and empowering online course Better Breathing for Better Health. Drawing on her years of experience as a Bowen practitioner and educator, Laura speaks with clarity, care, and conviction about why breathwork matters—and how we can all benefit from learning to breathe better.

Hi, it’s Laura here, Lancaster based Bowen practitioner and Bowen College Tutor.

I’m writing to you today to tell you about my 2 1/2 hour online course called Better Breathing for Better Health. I’ve been delivering it since 2023 in response to the very alarming statistics around respiratory health in the UK. I’m committed to giving my clients effective, cheap and easy ways to improve their own health between treatments. Last year, alongside the late Michael Mosley, I presented some of the information and ideas on the BBC Breakfast show. This was followed by BBC Radio a month later – and I’m super keen to keep spreading the word! You can also catch a recent interview recorded with Ben Calder and the BTPA here:

The Better Breathing workshop is informative and educational in ways that can be easily understood and communicated to family, friends and clients.

It includes lots of very effective tools to improve the breathing and overall health of people of all ages. As well as sharing knowledge and tools that can improve the health landscape from the ‘ground level up’, I promote a pro-active and preventative approach to health and wellbeing.

The breath work is ideal as it requires no equipment, is with us 24/7, is free, fully inclusive and has the potential to really transform the short and long term health of our communities. I feel really strongly that this information and its practical application needs to taken up in the same way as teeth brushing and regular hand washing.

The Better Breathing course provides the following:

  • A clear and easy understanding of the anatomy and physiology of breathing.
  • Up to date statistics related to respiratory health and the proven benefits on the immune system, ADHD, depression, anxiety, energy, attention and dental health that can be achieved with appropriate and regular attention to good breathing practises.
  • Assessments and tools to health you and your students gauge progress.
  • Easy to learn exercises that can be easily incorporated into the school day and have enormous benefits for children of all ages, improving student’s quality of life and participation in education tasks and activities.
  • A collection of resources for further reading and study.

Here is what previous attendees are saying about the Better Breathing workshop

“Very easy to understand, pitched at the perfect level and pace. I would highly recommend Better Breathing for Better Health because proper breathing is undeniably a vital aspect of the human body’s basic functions, essential for both life and overall well-being. Learning to breathe correctly can have a profound impact on physical health, mental clarity and emotional balance, making this course an invaluable resource for anyone looking to improve their quality of life.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed the training, very informative. I particularly enjoyed doing the assessments and exercises. I feel this is an important tool that we should be helping young people with.”

“I totally enjoyed the session. The time flew by, as I was so wrapped up in what she was sharing with us. I am no stranger to breathing pattern disorders, having specialised in them from a physio perspective. The holistic approach, and the respect and awe for the beauty and intelligence of the human body was new, and shed a whole new light.”

“I enjoyed everything!! Laura’s presentation style is refreshing. Perfect mix of science, thought provoking examples, practical breathing techniques and beautiful poetry/art. This training is for EVERYONE! I can’t think of anyone this wouldn’t benefit.”

“I would recommend this session because it opens so many doors, coming at breath from many angles, so it is relevant who anyone who is alive and leading a modern lifestyle. I loved the way Laura gave us simply loads of information, so there will be something there that will pique anyone’s interest. And I also loved that she kept reinforcing the 4 basic principles, so that anyone can come away with a simple plan of action. I also loved the experiential parts, which brought it all to life for me.“
